CHAPTER FIVE

Jason sat and stared at his laptop screen.

Another largely fruitless week had passed since he had met Delilah. Okay, well, that wasn’t entirely true. He’d technically earned his biggest paycheck ever and he’d had a lot of sex with Hannah, and that was awesome. Delilah had come to see him once more at his and Hannah’s place, and Hannah had watched them fuck, and that had also been very awesome. But it had been another week of prolonged work hours. He’d gotten overtime four times this week and had been working for seven days straight.

He was exhausted.

Today was the first day he’d made himself sit down and work on his book. But nothing was coming. Lara was supposed to be over in about twenty minutes and he’d had a shower already, so he wanted to squeeze in something, anything. But he was just looking at his open document, a few pages filled with character information and the very beginnings of the plot outline. He had ideas, and he often thought a lot about them at work, but when he got home, they were...fuzzy. Distant. Shadows of their former selves.

He could pulled them from the depths and transcribe them to paper, at least he thought, if he had time and put a lot of effort into it, but fuck he was just so mentally exhausted. His boss was promising to hire someone else but he was beginning to wonder if the man was lying, or at least stretching the truth. He had to be saving a shitload of money by paying largely one person to handle everything. There were two people that worked the day shift and the boss himself was now covering the overnight shift, and frequently needed Jason’s help with stocking, inventory, cleaning, small basic types of maintenance and repair…

It was endless.

And he wasn’t seeing a raise, plus he only got time and a quarter for overtime, which he’d never even heard of before, but it was in the contract. He’d just gotten home tonight at a little past one thirty in the morning.

Jason sighed and gave up. He exited from the document and turned off the laptop, closing it in disgust.

“You doing okay, honey?” Hannah asked.

“No, not particularly,” he replied, getting up and going over to sit down next to her on the couch. “I’ve had difficulty writing before, but this is ridiculous. I just...can’t think. It’s like my brain is just blocked off, or at least the creative part of it. All I want to do when I get home is be lazy with you. And fuck, and then be lazy.”

“The desire to be lazy is a powerful one,” Hannah agreed. She had him face away from her and started massaging his shoulders. “Sorry, babe. I know what it can be like, although I’ve largely forgotten. I think...” She hesitated.

“What?” he asked, almost drifting off from how good the massage felt.

“I’m not sure. I guess I don’t know what to do,” she replied, though she said it like she was going to say something, but then had suddenly decided against it.
